AP Art History
This is a year long course on the history of art from phrehistoric times to the present.  Students enrolled in the class prepare for the Advanced Placement exam in May.

AP Studio - 2-Dimensional Design

Course Description:   This year long course is designed to prepare students for the Studio Art Portfolio designated by the College Board.  Students complete 30 works of art from which they choose to submit in their chosen portfolio, Drawing, 2D Design or 3D-Design.  The course is planned to equal a college freshman studio art course either for art majors, graphic design majors or liberal arts majors who need studio art experiences.  The portfolio resulting from this course must show high quality, deep student involvement and concentration, great breadth of understanding and superior effort. The portfolio is due  in May.

Assignments:  Students will be given weekly assignments based on the requirements of the AP Studio Art Portfolio.  These assignments are designed to help students develop and demonstrate mastery of their basic and advanced skills.  These include observational drawing, interpretive drawing, use of the elements and principles of art and mastery of media.  Students are also asked to demonstrate originality and creative thinking in their work.  They are expected to work independently and are encouraged to continually critic their work using the aesthetic scanning grid in the AP manual.

Grading:  Assignments are due on the due date, no exceptions.  Students will be given opportunities to rework assignments and resubmit them for a higher grade.  Students are expected to maintain a class grade no lower than a C.  Students that don’t achieve this level of competency are transferred to a different class for the second semester.  Attendance is mandatory.

Materials:  Basic materials including, but not limited to, are supplied:  Art books, periodicals, slides, reproductions and Web-based resources.  A field trip to the Minneapolis Art Institute and The Sculpture Garden is planned if money permits.

The Portfolio:  The AP portfolio is submitted the first week in May.  During the year the students take slides of their works to submit and if applicable submit five quality pieces for the 2-D or Drawing portfolios.  They also must write a commentary describing their concentration and how it evolved.

Prerequisite:  successful completion of Beginning Ceramics, Drawing or Photography.  Students must also submit examples of their work and complete an assignment over the summer before being admitted.
