Como Park Young Democrats is a student driven after school club that was founded by students, driven by students, sustained (or let dormant) by students. As the advisor my role has been to respond to student interest and assist them in being as involved as each group wishes to be.
The Club was founded by students of the Class of 03 in the spring of 2002 because they had a desire to both learn about the political process (classic civics and hands on participatory electoral politics). This group set a tone that lasted for about ten years (mostly dormant at the moment).
Typical events that the differing activists have done over the years include structured discussions, guest speakers (including current U.S. Senator Al Franken and other local elected officials and political activists), engagement as volunteers in campaigns and more. A number of Club activists have found significant involvement in electoral politics as adults; most recently one of our alum was a paid field organizer for the Hillary Clinton campaign and another did work for Bernie Sanders. At least three are career activists in three different states.
