Insurance & Workers' Compensation

  • Workers' Compensation

    SPPS, as a municipal subdivision of the State, is self-insured for workers' compensation liability. (MN Statute 471.981, subd. 1; MN Statute 466.01, subd. 1; MN Statute 176.181)  SPPS absorbs all workers' compensation expenses - there is no insurance carrier involved.

    Liability, Property, and Auto Insurance

    SPPS, as a political subdivision of the State, may by ordinance or resolution of its governing body self insure against liability.  (MN Statute 471.981, subd.1; MN Statute 466.01, subd.1)  Currently, SPPS has insurance policies for property, liability, and auto coverage.  (MN Statute 471.345, subd.1)

     

    Incident Counts  

     

    SPPS' policies are non-transferable; they are not individual employee policies. Employees are designated as insured by role/function only with respect to work performed for SPPS, and the insured status is only for acts within the course and scope of employment by SPPS. (CGL Section II, 2.a.) SPPS employees cannot utilize SPPS liability insurance to cover their activities in the employ of another entity or for volunteering with another entity. SPPS employees cannot utilize SPPS liability insurance to cover their educational pursuit with another entity. No Certificates of Liability Insurance will be issued for individual employee use. SPPS employees are free to purchase individual professional liability insurance for any of their needs outside of SPPS.
