Como Park Senior High Newsletter 5/30/2016
What do spring and high school graduation have in common? How about sunny afternoons, ice cream and making memories? The specialized services department of autism spectrum disorders is proud to announce that on June 7, Como Park Senior High School students Val Diaz and Keith Travis will have personal long-time wishes realized. Val has always dreamed of the possibility of someday working as an ice cream truck vendor and Keith Travis loves anything related to fast, sleek sports cars. So to honor these two students for their accomplishments of completing high school, Val will be working the counter of a Blue Bell Ice Cream truck while Keith hosts a car show spotlighting the cool sports cars owned by Como staff members, Ms. Vicky Schuch and Ms. Amy Dutton. Invited guests include 50 students and staff who have contributed to Val and Keith’s success. Gratitude goes out to the Como Park Parent Boosters for providing the funding to make these dreams come true.
Como Park Future Educators hosted Positivity Week to put a spotlight on the importance of good mental health and suicide prevention. The week was filled with affirmative messages, a guest speaker from NAMI (the National Alliance of Mental Illness) and a raffle with prizes. Money was raised for a non-profit organization that helps adolescents struggling with addiction, depression, and self-injury called "To Write Love on Her Arms".
Over 90 sophomores and juniors trained this week to be Link Leaders for the 2016-2017 school year. Link Leaders form Link Crew, a group focused on helping freshmen through kindness and generosity. Link Crew will lead a freshmen orientation on Thursday, September 1st from 8am-12pm to welcome new students and connect them with mentors. Thank you Link Leaders for your dedication and service!
The Como Park Robotics team competed in their first State Tournament last weekend and finished in the top half of all teams! While we did not get chosen for the elimination rounds, Sparky performed admirably and everyone had a great time. The MSHSL even had a generous gift for our hospitalized teammate, which all the teams were able to sign. We are looking forward to next year and our next run at State! Huge thanks go out to all of our supporters, parents, and mentors for a fantastic season. Don't forget to follow our adventures on Twitter @ComoBeastBot!
