Course Description:
Inthis course, students will gain an understanding of the importance ofnutrition and fitness in their everyday life.  They will examine thefood choices they make, facts about foods, nutrients, food safety,making smart choices as a consumer and the importance of physicalactivity.  Students will finally be challenged to research, develop,and test nutritious food products for the market.  Through thisprocess, students complete market research, design packaging, create anutrition label, complete a cost analysis, order supplies, developadvertising, determine nutrition density, demonstrate customer service,sell the product, and evaluate their personal and group performance.

Comprehensive Standard:  Integrate knowledge, skills and practices required in food production and services.
Comprehensive Standard:  Demonstrate nutrition and wellness practices that enhance individual and family wellbeing

Standard 1:  Investigate career options related to nutrition, wellness, and food preparation.
Benchmarks
A)    Determine personal interest, aptitudes, and abilities.
B)    Investigate entrepreneurial and career pathways in relationship to life       
        goals and personal attributes.
C)    Establish a career action plan and vocational preparation goals.
D)    Demonstrate effective speaking skills, effective listening skills, appropriate 
        feedback, problem-solving techniques, effective team building skills, and
        communication strategies.
E)    Analyze career paths within entrepreneurial and customer service
        industries.

Standard 2:  Analyze factors that influence nutrition and wellness practices across the life span.
Benchmarks
A)    Examine physical, emotional, social, psychological, and spiritual
        components of individual and family wellness.
B)    Compare the impact of psychological, cultural, and social influences on
        food choices and other nutrition practices.
C)    Examine the governmental, economic, and technological influences on
        food choices and practices.
D)    Investigate the impact of global and local events and conditions on food
        choices and practices.
E)    Examine legislation and regulations related to nutrition and wellness issues.

Standard 3:  Evaluate the nutritional needs of individuals and families in relation to health and wellness across the lifespan.
Benchmarks
A)    Assess the effect of nutrients on health, appearance, and peak
        performance.
B)    Research the relationship of nutrition and wellness to individual and family
        health throughout the lifespan.
C)    Assess the impact of food and diet fads, food addictions, and eating
        disorders on wellness.
D)    Appraise sources of food and nutrition information, including food labels,
        related to health and wellness.

4.    Nutrient management: A Lifelong Activity
5.    Other Aspects of Wellness
6.    Making Informed Choices

Course Expectations:

•    Complete a variety of learning activities and projects.
•    Pass written quizzes and tests
•    Engage in numerous technology activities
•    Create nutritious food products in the Humboldt Food Technology Lab.
•    Create a Strength Training Program through aerobic & anaerobic exercises.

Classroom Rules and Expectations:

IT IS EXPECTED THAT THESE RULES APPLY TO EVERY STUDENT:
1.    Be on time to class
2.    No standing around/visiting while jobs/tasks/duties are to be completed.
3.    Insubordination will not be tolerated.
4.    Rudeness to guests, co-workers, will not be tolerated.
5.    No eating, drinking, chewing gum is allowed when on task.
6.    No horseplay, throwing things, punching, pushing, hitting, etc. in the
       classroom.
7.    The use of obscene language is prohibited.
8.    No personal jackets, hats, or electronic devices, food etc. will be tolerated.
9.    No personal phone calls or playing with the phone. Please answer phone
       politely by saying “Family Consumer Science”.
10.  No passes to the bathroom, counselors, visitors to class etc. as classroom 
       time is to be wisely used.
11.  Be safe and work safe.
12.  Do not bring valuables, purses/money to class.
13.  You are responsible for your learning, take advantage of the experience
       available.
14.  YOUR JOB in this class is EVERYTHING and you will be graded on
       your effort and participation, worry only about YOURSELF!

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR RULES:
1.    RESPECT all people and equipment.
2.    Be IN class and ON TIME.
3.    Be PREPARED home work & supplies, such as folder, paper and pencil.
4.    LISTEN and FOLLOW directions.
5.    Be RESPONSIBLE for learning.
6.    Observe class SAFETY rules.



STUDENT AGREEMENT:
Ihave read and thoroughly understand my rules and responsibilities forsafe operation of equipment, sanitary and acceptable behavior andactions. The grade and credit I earn will be based upon my behavior andactions. I will make it MY RESPONSIBILITY to be sanitary and safe inclass daily, on time, with work completed.
