Course Summary
This is a semester course that introduces students to the intense worldof Teens. The class will provide an objective, sensitive presentationof the contemporary issues facing today’s teens. It will help studentsmake adjustments by explaining the changes they are experiencing andexploring the choices they will be making. Students will focus ontheir personal development and relationships with family, friends,romances, employers, and co-workers. The purpose of the course is tothink critically and apply concepts that will aid in the strengtheningof the self.

Methods of Assessment
Students will engage in a summative assessment for each unit, whichwill show knowledge of the content studied. Examples of summativeassessment can include: exams, quizzes, projects, research papers,essays, case studies, presentations and primary document analysis. Summative assessments will represent 70% of the total student grade foreach quarter of the course. Students will also engage in formativeassessments for each unit, which will help students develop skills andknowledge, and indicate progress toward the summative assessmentsgiven. Examples of formative assessment can include: questions, notes,readings, homework, smaller in-class assignments, graphic organizersand quick writes. Summative assessments will represent 30% of the totalstudent grade for each quarter of the course.

Late Work and Make-Up Work
All assignments are due on their due date at the beginning of the classperiod. Any work that is late must be turned in within five schooldays of the due date and will be received for half credit (late workdue to excused absences will not be penalized). Tests and quizzes needto be made up within five school days if the absence was excused. Please note that major projects and papers will not be accepted late. Late work will not be accepted near the end of the grading periods(mid-quarter and quarter). All make-up work is the students’responsibility. Students must check the posted assignment chart or thestudent/parent portal and then stay after school for explanations andassistance. No extra credit is given. Grading policies are subject tochange based on the needs of the 9th Grade House. Students will beinformed prior to any changes.
Required Supplies:
Daily, each student should have a pen/pencil, writing paper, their planner and a 3 -ring binder just for Teen Issues. They will have an assigned text book which can be kept in the classroom, and must be returned before the last day.
Extra Assistance:
I am available to help students most afternoons after school and at other times when necessary. Please let me know when you would like to meet.
Cheating, Plagiarizing, Stealing, Etc.:
Cheating, assisting with cheating, plagiarizing (intentionally or unintentionally), stealing, and defacing property are not tolerated and will be dealt with as directed by school policy (see student handbook).
Pass policy:
Each student will be allowed three passes per quarter for non-academic reasons (unless emergency). Passes will be issued at convenient times for the class (ex. during work time, not during lecture) as long as the student is in good standing. To receive a pass, students need to provide their planner issued by the school.
Electronic Devices and Food: Do not bring food, or electronic devices to class. If these items are seen they will be confiscated and can be retrieved at the end of class. If the student is found with these items again they
will not be able to get them until the end of the day or a parent may be called to arrange to pick them up. Cell phones will need to be retrieved from the administration.
Attendance:
Students are expected to be present and on time to each class. We willfollow the Como High School attendance policy in class. Please referto the Student Handbook for more information on Como High School attendance policies. A student will be counted absent rather thantardy, ten minutes after the bell rings. If a student is tardy/absentthey may attend community service after school. Make up will not beoffered the last week of each term. Additional points will be given forin class participation worth 20% of the final grade. You will gainpoints from completing your assignments, coming to class on time, andparticipating in class discussion. Tardiness will be subtracted fromthe daily points. Participation points cannot be made up, regardlessof the nature of the absence.
