COURSE DESCRIPTION FOR SPANISH V, VI – 2010-2011 Sra. Herrema-Johnson Como Park High School, Room 1416 Bienvenido/a a la clase V,VI! ¡Espero que estés listo/a para un buen año! **CONTENT – This year you will review vocabulary and structures but will learn new reading writing and speaking skills; class is totally in Spanish. Short stories, novels, plays, poetry, art and songs will be studied and discussed in Spanish. You will develop more precise and technical vocabularies, write themes and give individual and group presentations. Discussions of the various people, cultures and regions of the Spanish-speaking world will be included. You will have the opportunity to prepare for the AP Language/lit test by using the activities we do in class and test–prep strategy books. **TEXT AND MATERIALS USED – A variety of materials will be used, including “Imagina” and its workbook, “Album” for short stories, “Authentik” magazine, plays, poetry, Internet, songs, television, videos and recipes. You need to have a good dictionary as well as your text. Homework, compositions and talks will be assigned frequently. Oral participation in Spanish, quizzes, tests and other assessments will be used to evaluate your progress and learning. **CLASS RULES – Respect yourself and others; everyone will make mistakes, including Sra. H-J. Respect property – yours, others’ and your classroom. Bring your book to class, every day; participate in class every day. Speak only in Spanish. Be on time, turn in your homework on time and be prepared. No phones, music or texting is allowed. **GRADING POLICY – Grades are based on a point system. Points will be given for all work. 90-100% = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D Below 60% = N Make up work is allowed for excused absences. You are responsible for finding out what you have missed and completing the work. Late or excused absence work will be accepted up to the day of the chapter/unit exam. (ONE week is allowed to make up tests.) You are required to earn 35 culture points first semester and 40 second semester. Extra credit (with teacher approval) may be done until the culture points are due; XCr will be accepted only after regular work is done. **ATTENDANCE – Good attendance is extremely important when learning a language.
