CIA World Factbook:  An annual publication by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency with basic almanac-style information about the various countries of the world. It gives a two- to three-page summary of the demographics, location, government, industry, military capability, etc, of all US-recognized countries and territories in the world. *(Not a purchased database.)

African American Registry:, A calendar-based series of accomplishments achieved by Black Americans in history.This registry includes audio and video clips, links to poetry and lyrics of theBlack culture and 12 category links. *(Not a purchased database.)

Answers.com: Search by asking a question.  Using a variety of reference sources it generates an organized page of relevant information about your search query without requiring you to click on any further Web links.  Caution: Answers.com uses Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia which accepts information from anyone, so search results must be carefully evaluated. *(Not a purchased database.)

Librarians’ Internet Index: A good site if you need to get topic ideas.  It provides pathways (clustering) for broad topics.  Includes a broad range of websites that can be trusted.  *(Not a purchased database.)

Clusty.com:  Another pathways search engine that clusters search results into categories for easier reference.  *(Not a purchased database.)

Statistical Abstract.com:  Provides statistics for states and U.S. departments.  *(Not a purchased database.)

Fedstats.gov: Provides statistics for states and U.S. government agencies. *(Not a purchased database.)

Citizendium.org : Provides information written by experts in their fields.  *(Not a purchased database.)

Infoplease.com : Information Please Almanac.  Provides information on many topics including history, statistics, holidays, biographies, timelines, careers, college information, perpetual calendar, conversion tables, periodic table and others.  *(Not a purchased database.)

Google e-Books: Provides partial and full text books.  Use the Advanced Search Book page to search either or both.  *(Not a purchased database.)

Google Scholar:   Enables specific searches of scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, pre-prints, abstracts, and technical reports.  *(Not a purchased database.)

Literature and Biography-Related Databases from St. Paul Public Library.  The St. Paul Public Library has several literature-related sites which you can access if you have a SPPL library card.  In order to open the links, you will need your library card number and a pin number.  If you don’t have these, you can call the St. Paul Public Library system at 651-266-7000 or go online to www.sppl.org to find out how to get your card or pin number:

            Literature Resource Center:  Covers novelists, poets, essayists,    journalists, writers, and criticism of their works. Includes Contemporary Authors, Contemporary Literary Criticism, and the Dictionary of Literary   Biography.

            Contemporary Authors:  Profiles of authors' lives and their works.

            LitFinder:  Search poems, essays, speeches, stories, and plays. Many (but not all) of the citations include the full text of the items indexed.

            Biography Resource Center :  Biographical information on more than 250,000 people, as well as access to a million brief biographies from Who's Who.

 
NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES

ProQuest Newspapers:  World-wide database holding thousands of newspapers.  Tip:  Check box  "full text."

SIRS Researcher:  (Click "Begin a New Session".)  Good for topic ideas.  Do a quick and easy search for anything relating to social, scientific, economic, and political issues worldwide. Contains records for articles selected from domestic and international newspapers, magazines, journals, and government publications.  You will find searchable full-text articles, a dictionary and a thesaurus.

Ethnic NewsWatch:  Ethnic, minority and native press newspapers, magazines and journals provide a non-mainstream viewpoint.  Available in Spanish.  Tip:  Check box  "full text."

CNN Student News:  Contains several topical articles on a variety of subjects. *(Not a purchased database.)

MagPortal.com:  Free online source for many articles. *(Not a purchased database.)

Findarticles.com:  Free online source for many articles. *(Not a purchased database.)

COMBINATION OF BOOKS, NEWSPAPERS & MAGAZINES

Gale Group   Provided by ELM, this group of databases includes reference books, full-text magazine and newspaper articles, photos, audio and video clips for students of all ages as well as professional materials for teachers:

EBSCO's MasterFILE Premier:  This multidisciplinary database provides full text for more than 2,050 general reference publications with information dating as far back as 1975. Covering virtually every subject area of general interest, it also includes more than 350 full text reference books, 84,606 biographies, 88,463 primary source documents, and an image collection of 107,135 photos, maps and flags. This database is updated daily via EBSCOhost. Tip:  Check box  "full text." 

 

EBSCO's MegaFILE:  Another multi-disciplinary database that provides full text for more than 15,000 total publications and indexing & abstracting for more than 19,000 publications. Coverage spans every area of academic study and general interest subject area and offers information dating as far back as the 1800s. In addition, the database contains more than 84,000 biographies, 83,000 primary source documents, 10,000 company profiles and an image collection of more than 107,000 photos, maps and flags. This database is updated daily on EBSCO>host.  Tip:  Check box "full text."

Electronic Library for Minnesota (ELM): Search for magazine, newspaper, and journal articles, eBooks, and information from reference sources..
